Plymouth, UK

Graphic designer for Plymouth businesses.

I’m Jon Heavens, a Devon-based graphic designer with over 15 years of experience, including extensive publication and urban-design work across Plymouth — the Devonport South Yard masterplan, Stowford Mill at Ivybridge, and West Carclaze on the Cornwall border, all delivered through LHC Design’s graphics team. The work covers brand identity, print and publication, illustration, and digital design.

Plymouth has more going on than its reputation suggests. The marine and defence economy still anchors the city through HMNB Devonport. The Royal William Yard has rebuilt itself into a creative quarter. The Barbican carries the hospitality side. Mutley and the university belt drive the independent scene. Plymouth Hoe pulls the visiting weekend crowd. Different parts of the city, different briefs — the design approach holds across all of them.

Who I Work With in Plymouth

Plymouth’s economic mix is more layered than most South West cities — the marine and defence sector at Devonport, the creative and hospitality cluster at the Royal William Yard and Barbican, an independent retail and food scene from Mutley to North Hill, the university driving student-facing services, and a growing tech and digital community. The work spans every sector. The standard does not change.

Architecture, Planning & Urban Design

Publication design, masterplan documents, consultation print, and 3D visualisation montages for architecture and urban-design firms operating across Plymouth and the South West. The work that turns a planning proposal into something a community can actually understand and respond to.

Hospitality & Independent Food

Restaurants, bars, cafes, and independent food businesses from the Barbican to the Royal William Yard, Mutley, and beyond. Brand identity, menu design, signage, and the print suite a venue needs to actually run.

Independent hospitality across Plymouth and South Devon

Marine, Defence & Engineering

Marine, defence-adjacent, and engineering businesses operating from the Devonport corridor and the wider South West coast. Identity work that reads as serious without being sterile, plus print and publication for the technical material these businesses run on.

Trades & Services

Trade businesses, contractors, and service providers across Plymouth and the surrounding villages. Brand identity that translates from a van wrap to an invoice template to a social profile, plus the operational print a service business actually uses.

Retail, Makers & Independent Brands

Independent retailers, makers, and product brands across Plymouth’s creative quarters. Packaging, labels, stationery, and digital systems that protect the craft of the product rather than papering over it.

Education, Charity & Community

Universities, schools, charities, and community organisations needing accessible, on-brand design across publication, signage, and digital. The work that has to land with multiple audiences without diluting any of them.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are you based in Plymouth?

I’m based in Devon and work with Plymouth clients regularly. A large share of my early career was spent on Plymouth and South West urban-design publication work through LHC Design — masterplans, consultation print, and 3D visualisation for sites including the Devonport South Yard. In-person meetings are available for fit-outs and project handovers when timing benefits from it.

Do you do publication design and consultation graphics?

Yes — extensively. Publication design, masterplan brochures, consultation print, and 3D-visualisation montages were the core of my LHC Design work, supporting some of the largest urban-regeneration projects in the South West (South Yard Devonport, Stowford Mill, West Carclaze, Bridgwater Innovation Centre). The methodology — turning technical proposal data into something the public can read in five minutes — carries across to brand and editorial work.

Can you handle a hospitality brand for the Barbican or Royal William Yard?

Yes. Hospitality brand work is one of my strongest disciplines, and venues in Plymouth’s creative quarters tend to need the same treatment as the South Devon coast venues I work with regularly — brand identity first, then the launch print pack (menus, signage, business cards, takeaway packaging), web with booking flow, and social templates.

How much does a brand or publication project cost?

Quoted per project after a proper brief. A standalone publication design sits in one range, a full brand-identity system sits in another, and a long-running consultation document with multiple iterations is different again. No templates, no fixed packages, no surprise fees.

How long does a typical project take?

Brand identity projects run four to eight weeks from brief to final files. Publication and consultation print projects vary by document length and consultation cycle — typically two to six weeks for a single document, longer if it runs through a public-consultation feedback loop.

What files do I receive at the end of a project?

Every asset in every format you need — AI, EPS, SVG, PDF, PNG, InDesign source files where relevant for publication work — plus brand guidelines where applicable. Print-ready for suppliers and web-ready for digital use. You own the files outright.
